Coco Young Hugs Trees & Spectral Reasoning

Coco Young shot at Prospect Park and in my studio last fall.

As artists and imagemakers we are often under pressure to create cohesive or conceptual works.
The adherence to this canon may burden the process or, at times groom it.
While shooting this little piece, there was very little pressure to create any type of branded identity.
The idea was to simply shoot for a day in the park and have some fun.
Very little preparation was involved and it was mostly an exercise between photographer and subject.
Later when going through the edit, it became clear that the studio images had little to do with the pictures from the park.
Dilemma.
It would have been simple to just exclude the studio images and be done with it, but the more I worked on the set the more ambivalent my feelings for it became.
I’ve decided to include the images and eschew the responsibility of trimming the superfluous out of respect for process. The work is autonomous.
Why write it? It’s for you to decide.

I've been really into making puzzles lately.... Either with friends, hanging out, or while talking on the phone or just zoning. I respect the tradition of this simple game and it's corporeal nature. In appreciation of this modality, I had some of my images made into puzzles to be sold for others enjoyment. These are images that i thought would be unique in this medium and also fun to put together. The intention is that you can put together the work and then later display it as an artists print. The finished puzzles are 380 X 260mm / 15" X 10". I hope to add more in the future. At least for now, this is my attempt at preserving a beautiful and "old - fashioned" pass-time. Have fun.

Sasha Panyuta

I recently shot these portraits of my friend Sasha Panyuta. She is an artist/painter living in New York.
The pictures are taken in her home and we used items from her own wardrobe to style the story.
I've been finding it interesting to work with "un-curated" spaces, so i've been "just showing up" with a camera and a prayer.
It's exciting to work off-seamless and step into an environment that hasn't been pre-inspected.
The results can be surprising, but often revealing. With this lack of structure comes a sense of freely observing the subject.
The piece is an example of this initiative.

new story "imperfectionism"

A series i've been working with in thinking about imperfection and it's service as what really is part of the unique perfection of things. Many of the images have been toyed with or altered in an attempt to "see" in a different way. This tampering is an exploration in gesture and by pulling imagery out of focus or cropping identifiers we might catch a glance at the more subtle visceral qualities of any candidly captured image. I'm not sure if anyone ever notices, but please pay attention to the titles in the menu bar at the top of your browser window... I often title each image with text relative to my perception of the image. These titles may either be of a personal relation to the image itself, or a more publicly directed voice. Oh yeah, and.. some of these are also pretty funny too. When you stop to think about it.

This imagery evokes a nostalgia for me personally and i wanted to apply my present thinking in slogan form to what was once such an important anthem of times past. Victor wears a "Chain Of Strength" t shirt from my personal collection.
